Belfast's development to be explored by new book

A new book will delve into the history of Belfast, exploring what events helped shape its urban history.

Entitled Belfast 400, a team of researcher's at Queens University have been award a grant of £60,000 by the Leverhulme Trust to complete the project.

Historians, archaeologists, geographers and social scientists from the learning institution will all feature in the compilation, which will be led by Professor Sean Connolly.

"The story of its remarkable rise as a major industrial and trading centre and the far-reaching social and cultural changes that came with it, remains largely untold," he noted.

Professor Connolly said the volume will look at what was behind the urban development of the city.

Lord Mayor of Belfast Pat Convery remarked the council is absolutely "delighted" to be taking part in the project, as people all over the world will be interested in the story.

The university recently offered individuals the opportunity to dine with famous Irish artist J B Vallely.
