Belfast's Lyric Theatre received a final boost to its fundraising campaign as Belfast-born actor Kenneth Branagh declared his support for the planned redevelopment project and appealed to the public to get behind the theatre.The Lyric needs to raise a further £150,000 by June 30th in order to secure enough funds for the proposed redevelopment which would see a new and bigger Lyric opened in Spring 2011.
In 2009 the Kresge Foundation, based in the US promised to provided the Lyric with £500,000 towards to development project, provided the Belfast theatre raised £800,000 by June 30th 2010.
Fundraising started in 2003 and so far £17.5 million has been secured. With just four weeks left until the deadline, the target is almost within reach.
Angela McCoskley, development director at the Lyric is confident that the target can be achieved.
The Lyric is not the only Belfast building to undergo a renovation and makeover project. St Malachy's Cathedral, which recently picked up Northern Ireland Project of the Year, went under a £3.7 million redevelopment.
