St Malachy's Cathedral wins project of the year

Visitors to Belfast may want to check out St Malachy's Cathedral after the religious building was named as Northern Ireland Project of the Year.

The decision comes after a £3.7 million renovation project was completed at the historic location in the Markets area of the city.

It also picked up the Building Conservation category at the awards, which were held in Queen's University.

Father Martin Graham noted the scheme had restored some features that had been there up to 70 years ago.

"It's bright, it's colourful and there is a lovely element of peace," he told the Belfast Telegraph.

The local winners will go through to contend in the global categories of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors competition.

It is the latest landmark in the city to get recognised recently, after the Ulster Museum scooped the accolade of best permanent exhibition in the UK at the Museums and Heritage Awards.
