Jug artwork to be displayed in Belfast city centre

Belfast city centre is to get a new public art installation that will adorn one of its best-known streets.

The Magic Jug will be placed on Fountain Street and the local authorities hope it will be as successful as the Big Fish.

It will be five-and-a-half metres tall and it will be based on an antique Irish water jug from around 1700, a time when George McCartney diverted Muny's Well in Sandy Row to supply water to Belfast's poor in Fountain Street.

Social development minister Margaret Ritchie - recently elected as leader of the SDLP - has commissioned the piece, stating that it will create a link between the history of the city and the modern improvements being made.

She noted that the capital is "well on its way to having a streetscape which compares highly with other regional capital cities across Europe [and] public art plays a key pivotal role in that".
