Belfast to 'reap rewards of tourism'

Belfast is to benefit from continued investment from tourism, its Lord Mayor has claimed.

Naomi Long, speaking in the Belfast Telegraph, noted that 2008 saw 7.1 million visitors come to the city - with the figure for last year expected to be boosted by the 800,000 people who visited the Tall Ships weekend.

She also pointed to the £1 billion worth of investment taking place in the city, including the reopening of the City Hall, the refurbishment of the Ulster Hall, the Ulster Museum, the Old Museum Arts Centre and the Lyric.

Ms Long wrote in the paper: "I believe that Belfast is a city that offers more than simply curiosity appeal; [it's] a city that people must visit - and, having done so, will want to revisit many times."

Her comments follow the recent announcement by planning minister Edwin Poots that a shopping centre in West Belfast is to be extensively redeveloped - bringing over 200 construction jobs to the area.
