Belfast Zoo takes census

The staff at Belfast Zoo have a difficult task ahead of them this winter as they prepare to count all the animals in the park.

Taking to the grounds with clipboards to look for any new kangaroos, zebras, tapirs and meerkats, the employees of the popular Belfast attraction will need to account for every birth and death, arrival and departure.

According to the Belfast Times, those planning on taking a trip to the Irish city in the next few months will be able to see the 32 penguins, ten sea lions, six Western lowland gorillas, five giraffes and five Moloch gibbons that have already been logged.

Mark Challis, manager at the zoo, said: "January is a busy time of year for many zoos across the UK because the annual stocktake is such a big job."

The facility currently boasts 140 different species of animals.

Belfast Zoo recently announced that it will be celebrating the Chinese New Year, meaning that those who are planning holidays to the city towards the end of February could make the most of the occasion. ADNFCR-1390-ID-19552885-ADNFCR
