New Belfast arts venue to be built

Work has begun today (December 8th) on the Belfast Metropolitan Arts Centre, after it was thought the project would be postponed for five months, jeopardising some 420 jobs.

In August, chairman of the venue Joris Minnie warned that this delay may occur as a result of funding from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) not being released but construction has now started on the £17.5 million hall, the Stage reports.

Upon completion, the building will be six storeys high and house the Old Museum Arts Centre, as well as dance studios, performance spaces, an art gallery and a shop, after DCAL provided £10.7 million to the total cost of the project.

This is the latest in a line of investments in infrastructure in Northern Ireland over the last ten years, which has seen refurbishments of Derry's Playhouse Theatre and the Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast.

It comes after Belfast's Ulster Museum recently reopened its doors to the public after a two-year refurbishment of its interior, costing £17 million, 4NI reports.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19502224-ADNFCR
