Belfast bridge reopens after gas leak

Both lanes of a bridge in Belfast have been reopened to traffic following a major gas leak, which saw 200 people evacuated from their homes on Monday (November 16th).

The city-bound lanes of the Ormeau Bridge are accessible once again to cars, as is one country-bound lane, although the other will remain closed until further notice, BBC News reports.

Monday's leak occurred after arsonists lit a fire under the bridge during the night, although road service engineer John McRobert observed that the bridge sustained no damage.

"The bridge is safe," he was quoted as saying. "It hasn't suffered any damage whatsoever."

An inquiry into the cause of the incident is currently underway by the police and Phoenix Gas.

This news comes after parts of Belfast's Cromac Street were closed to traffic when an underground bubble of air caused the tarmac on the street to collapse, leaving a gaping hole that could grow to 15 sq m.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19463719-ADNFCR
