Happy 400th birthday, Belfast

The city of Belfast is making preparations to mark its 400th birthday.

On April 27th 1613, the city's first charter, which forged the first Belfast corporation and established markets, was signed by James I.

This also meant that the city could appoint its first sovereign and John Vesey was given the title during the same year.

In order to properly mark the event and understand the course of action that led to the charter, a symposium is being held by the council, lord mayor councillor Naomi Long has announced.

She said it is essential for the audience to join in with this talk so that people can have their say and, stating that this is an "important part of developing any commemoration", invited them to "join us for a day of lively debate - looking back in history and forward to Belfast's future".

Elsewhere in Belfast, the reopening of the city's town hall will be celebrated with a carnival and caterpillar parade this Sunday (October 17th).ADNFCR-1390-ID-19411648-ADNFCR
