Belfast church placed on world monument list

The Carlisle Memorial Methodist Church in north Belfast has been included on the 2010 World Monuments Fund watch list.

Built between 1872 and 1875, the church was selected by the body despite the fact that it is unused and in a state of "serious physical degradation".

It joins 92 other sites around the world that have been placed on the watch list in an effort to preserve them and protect them from further damage.

"This high-quality Victorian building has been empty since 1982 and is now in a critical condition after many years of neglect," the World Monuments Fund said.

However, it remarked that the church is a "major landmark" for the surrounding area and has "significant links" to the local communities and Belfast as a whole.

A total of six sites in the UK and Republic of Ireland have made the list, including the Russborough estate in Ireland.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19398033-ADNFCR
