Belfast 'best' at being green

Belfast City Council has been rewarded for its environmental campaigns in national competition the Green Apple Awards, run by The Green Organisation.

Two of the city's schemes - Waste Week and the lord mayor's Big Cleanup Challenge - were commended for being examples of eco-friendly best practice.

Chairman of the council's health and environmental services committee Pat McCarthy remarked that the awards are "testament to the hard work that went on behind the scenes to develop these projects" and that responses from both schemes "[were] extremely positive".

Waste Week has been running for seven years and has as its motto: "Reduce, reuse and recycle." This year, the event introduced a Stitch and Style fashion show to teach people how best to turn their old clothes into something they could wear again. Local artists and designers could also be found selling their hand-worked items on site.

Cinema screenings were held as well, with entry being the price of one empty glass jar.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19370103-ADNFCR
