Entry period open for Belfast marathon

The period of entry for runners wishing to take part in the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon has been opened by one of Ireland's most respected athletes, Sonia O'Sullivan - with a ten per cent reduction off the full price for those received on or before October 9th.

Starting blocks are to be taken by competitors on May 3rd 2010 and it is hoped that more people than ever before will come to participate in the run, which recently received notification of continued sponsorship from water company RiverRock for the next three years.

Councillor Naomi Long, the lord mayor of Belfast, expressed disbelief at the fact that the marathon has been going for 29 years.

"Belfast, quite rightly, is regarded as one of the world's friendliest marathons and runners from near and far are always encouraged by the warmth of the support they find in all four corners of our city," she said.

Incentives to run fast have been set in place by the marathon's organisers, with a £2,000 prize for whoever breaks the men's 1985 record set by Marty Deane and a £1,000 bonus for the woman who beats Joyce Kandia's 2009 time.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19357069-ADNFCR
