New sculpture comes to Belfast

A new sculpture that is intended to represent the multi-cultural face of Belfast has been given pride of place on a railway bridge.

Located on the lower Ormeau Road, the specially-commissioned work - part of the Arts Council and Belfast City Council's Re-imaging Communities programme - is intended to be a representation of the cultural variety of the area, as well as linking it to the Gasworks and city centre.

Dr Pol Deeds of project coordinator An Droichead remarked upon the company's delight at having completed the piece.

"An Droichead values its place at the heart of the community here in the lower Ormeau, yet we also represent a language community that is spread across a far wider area, from the Short Strand to Carryduff," he said.

The steel sculpture - created by Patricia Lavery and Tracey McVerry - consists of two arcs intercepting, supporting a piece of colourful, fused glass.
