Belfast council 'helps tourists'

A new initiative has been set up by Belfast City Council that helps tourists and holidaymakers navigate the town's streets.

The signage scheme - which incorporates signposts and information boards found at key points across the city - has won an award for its forward thinking in terms of improving ease of access in and around Belfast.

Chairman of the council's development committee councillor William Humphrey said that, due to the record number of people who visited Belfast in 2008, the council knew that something had to be done to help people get around and enjoy their stay more.

"By helping to make the city easier to navigate and understand, we are not only improving the experience of visitors to Belfast, but also helping our own residents," he commented.

The council has also begun talks with Sail Training International which organises the Tall Ships Festival as, given the success of August's event where an estimated 800,000 people turned out to watch, it is eager to host the event again.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19320197-ADNFCR
