Belfast mural 'to undergo a repaint'

A paramilitary mural is to be repainted to celebrate the lives of important Belfast citizens.

Belfast City Council, alongside the Arts Council, has made the decision to replace the original artwork - found in the Ardoyne region at the junction of Alliance Parade and Alliance Road - as part of its Re-imaging Communities initiative.

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Naomi Long, said the project symbolises the progression of Belfast communities towards a more positive future.

"This is a prime example of what re-imaging is all about - taking us out of the divisions of the past into a new era of hope and enlightenment, reflecting the heritage of our diverse communities in a positive manner," she commented.

Other projects set up as part of the communities programme include ten new murals to replace other paramilitary works and the installation of ceramic mosaics on one of the peace walls of the city as well as a wall painting inspired by a Tom Kerr poem.

Visitors to Belfast might also like to go to the Coors Light Open House Festival in September, which features appearances by singer-songwriter Beth Orton and the Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir over five days.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19313686-ADNFCR
