Top Gear to race through Belfast's sewers

In a move to rival The Italian Job, three television personalities are taking to the Irish sewerage system - each in their own Mini Cooper.

Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond will soon be recreating scenes from the film in which Charlie Croker - played by Michael Caine - hatches a plan to escape from the mafia and the police after stealing $4 million (£2.4 million) worth of gold.

Northern Ireland Water approached the television show about a potential episode shoot as a means of promoting the Belfast Sewers Project, which aims to improve water quality in the city's rivers, reduce flood risks and upgrade the Victorian sewer network.

A spokesman for the scheme described the sewer improvements as "one of the biggest civil engineering projects in the UK", stating the company often held talks with organisations and businesses regarding promotion of the venture.

Work on the restructuring of the drainage system began in 2005 and is scheduled for completion in 2010, at a cost of £120 million.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19278585-ADNFCR
