Exchange rate boosts Belfast tourism

An increasing number of people are choosing to visit Belfast for breaks, new figures have revealed.

Belfast City Council has indicated that there was a three per cent overall rise in the number of visitors to the city in the past year.

In its annual Belfast Tourism Monitor, the council explained that the exchange rate is contributing to this rise, with the weakness of the pound against the euro encouraging travellers from the Republic of Ireland in particular.

More than four out of every five day-trippers in 2008 were from the Republic, with out-of-state visitors growing by 43 per cent and day-trippers by 143 per cent.

"This growth can be largely attributed to the growing number of visitors from the Republic of Ireland," said councillor William Humphrey, chairman of the council's development committee.

He added that a particular rise in visitors was seen in the run up to last Christmas.

More than two thirds of visitors to Belfast last year were making their first trip to the capital.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19251258-ADNFCR
