Mummy returns to Belfast

An ancient Egyptian mummy is set to return to Belfast this year when a museum reopens.

Since 1834, the mummy of Takabuti has been in Northern Ireland. However, she has been in storage for nearly three years as the Ulster Museum has been extensively refurbished.

With the museum scheduled to reopen in October, Takabuti will be placed back at the corner of the Botanic Park in Belfast.

Dr Jim McGreevy, head curator at National Museums Northern Ireland, told the BBC that the mummy "has been a source of wonder and awe in Belfast".

"She dates from 660 BC and was the daughter of a priest living in Thebes in the Valley of the Kings," he said.

He added that the museum expects more people than ever to flock to the Ulster Museum when it opens its doors again - with the mummy among the main attractions.

As well as The Mummy film trilogy, two Night At The Museum films have also been recent hits at the box office.ADNFCR-1390-ID-19244731-ADNFCR
