The Lyric Theatre is set to begin a major makeover today, with the finished article expected to attract many more people into the arts in Belfast.A new 440-seat main auditorium as well as a 150-capacity studio theatre will be unveiled when the project is finished, which is expected to be in 2011.
New bars and a riverfront foyer, plus extra rehearsal and dressing room space are all parts of the redesign.
It is expected to cost £18 million to complete the job and fundraising has already raised more than £16.5 million.
Mark Carruthers, the Lyric chairman, told the Belfast Telegraph that it is "a red letter day" for theatre in Northern Ireland.
Culture and Arts Minister Gregory Campbell added: "The Lyric is one of Northern Ireland’s most important cultural assets and I believe that the new theatre will provide a much valued facility for audiences and artists alike.
"The Lyric is also recognised for the important role it has played and will continue to play in the development of drama in Northern Ireland."
A grant from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland has also been awarded to the theatre.
