Elephants for Belfast Zoo

People flying in to Belfast could head to the zoo to see some exciting new animals.

A number of elephants are to make the zoo their new home, joining existing elephant Tina.

It is expected that some of the new elephants will have a background in the circus and they are female, non-breeding animals.

An expert has been brought in to help the zoo prepare for its new intake. Californian elephant authority Alan Roocroft said that he was creating an "environment with more enrichment activity" for the elephants.

Miranda Stevenson, director of British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria, stated: "Belfast Zoo will be a place of excellence for a small herd of non-breeding cows.

"This ensures good capacity for other zoos to continue breeding elephants during reproductive years."

Recently, an eastern bongo named Bozo was born at the zoo, bringing the number of these animals that visitors can see in Belfast up to eight.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18990946-ADNFCR
