Mummy the draw when museum reopens

People who are fascinated by the history of ancient Egypt will be pleased to hear that progress is being made to reopen the Ulster Museum in Belfast – including its most famous exhibit.

The museum closed for refurbishment in 2006 but is set to open its doors again next autumn.

When it does, the first mummy to ever be brought to Northern Ireland, Takabuti, will be included.

She is the mummified remains of an ancient Egyptian priest's daughter and Winifred Glover, the museum's curator of world cultures, told the BBC that some improvements have been made to her exhibit.

A new sculpture of the girl's face has been made to look how it would have when she was alive, she stated.

"We've had lots of letters and emails from people asking about her and she will be back on display next year. She was a person, so there's more to her than any other exhibit, like a axe-head, you can't get away from that - it makes quite a connection," she added.

The most famous mummy to be excavated from Egypt is Tutankhamun, an ancient pharaoh who was discovered in 1922.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18899007-ADNFCR
