Belfast's biggest sculpture plans unveiled

Plans to build the biggest public art sculpture in the history of Belfast have been revealed.

It will be called Rise and has been designed by renowned artist Wolfgang Buttress to represent "the revitalisation of Belfast", in the shape of a stunning white and silver aluminium globe.

Rise is set to be situated at Broadway Roundabout and will be 37.5 metres high and 30 metres wide.

Belfast City Council, the Department for Social Development and the National Lottery, through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, will all help fund the project.

Lord Mayor Councillor Tom Hartley believes the sculpture will play a big part in the future of the city.

"More than two million vehicles travel past the roundabout at Broadway every month. This sculpture will be a welcoming beacon to Belfast for local people and tourists," he said.

"It is symbolic of the revitalisation of Belfast and will be timeless."

Wolfgang Buttress is from Birmingham and has had exhibitions of his work presented in countries including the US and Japan.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18883747-ADNFCR
