Belfast is UK karaoke capital

Belfast has been named as the karaoke capital of the UK after coming top of a new poll of destinations most popular for the activity.

People flying in to Belfast will have the chance to devour the atmosphere in the numerous karaoke bars that have earned the city the title of Game's top karaoke city.

There has been an upturn in the number of people taking part in karaoke as a result of the success of programmes such as Pop Idol and X Factor, while numerous computer games also allow people to sing at home.

Former Pop Idol and Popstars: The Rivals judge Nicki Chapman said: "From my own experience on Pop Idol I know as well as anyone just how many people are out there who - rightly or wrongly - fancy themselves the next Mariah Carey or Robbie Williams!"

"Indeed you just have to look at the success of Singstar to see that we've become a nation of karaoke fanatics."

X Factor has dominated the headlines this week after a judging decision by Louis Walsh to vote off contestant Laura White provoked outrage among the public.
