Sports venue officially opened

A Belfast sporting venue has been officially opened by one of the UK's most celebrated athletes.

Lord Sebastian Coe, who is the chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, flew into Belfast in order to open the University of Ulster's new sports facilities.

Costing £20 million to build, the facilities include indoor sprint tracks, sports science areas and floodlit pitches.

Lord Coe commented: "Opening the University of Ulster’s new sports centre is a hugely exciting opportunity.

"The range of elite and community services it provides are extensive, and will without a doubt lead the effort in Northern Ireland to encourage sports participation at all levels."

An honorary degree of Doctor of the University was presented to Lord Coe on his visit, as a mark of his services to sport.

It has been claimed that Belfast could be used as a venue if Great Britain and Northern Ireland go ahead with plans to include a football squad in its London 2012 team. ADNFCR-1390-ID-18871719-ADNFCR
