Belfast 'poetry slams' attracting interest

An underground literary scene in Belfast is attracting interest from far and wide, with 'poetry slams' currently all the rage in the city.

The events see writers take to the stage in a pub called the Crane Bar once a month and compete to win the title of the night's best performer.

Called the North Beach Poetry Nights, anybody with an interest in poetry, plus anybody who has but doesn't know it yet, is invited to come along, the Irish Times reports.

John Walsh, founder of the events, told the newspaper: "It brings poetry alive. Quite often there is relevance - the poetry has a topical, political or social relevance - or it's humorous, and it's put across in a way that's lively rather than a deadpan poetry reading.

"You have people that come in and have no interest in poetry and they think, wow, I didn't think poetry could be like that. It's breathing new life into the whole scene."

Northern Ireland is famed for its literary traditions, with revered writers such as Narnia creator CS Lewis from the country.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18859973-ADNFCR
