Hawking around in Belfast city centre

People who are interested in wildlife and birds of prey in particular could be tempted to head to Belfast to witness an innovative new scheme at first hand.

Falconry is set to be used in the city centre in order to control the problem of pigeons that blight every major city in the UK.

A new business called NBC Bird and Pest Solutions has launched the scheme and will utilise hawks, stationing them around the city, to deter pigeons from causing problems, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

Jay Parker, who runs the firm with his dad Tom, told the newspaper: "The birds of prey don't hunt the birds. They will just fly up to a roof and sit there. Just their presence will scare the pigeons off — it's amazing.

"We can use our hawks in the city centre, in industrial estates, landfill sites, all over. It turns heads and creates a lot of interest."

The pair also presents their birds of prey in demonstrations in schools and fairs.

A study from science journal Ibis has found that birds of prey numbers in the wild actually flourish on moors that are managed.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18857657-ADNFCR
