Ambitious plans to build a state-of-the-art urban sports park have been given the go ahead to open in Belfast next year.Belfast City Council has announced that it expects the park to be open by around Easter next year.
A facility for BMXing, rollerblading and skateboarding has been in the offing for a number of years, with Belfast Urban Sports (BUS) being central to the development of the idea.
Bob Stoker, the council's park and leisure committee chairman, commented that he was excited about the prospect of "a world class iconic urban sports park in the heart of Belfast".
"We have consulted with urban sports enthusiasts and are confident that what we will have will meet all their needs and allow urban sports to develop to their highest levels in Belfast," he said.
"We also believe it will attract enthusiasts from all over Northern Ireland and even further afield."
It will be situated on Nelson Road and has received funding from both the EU's Programme for Peace, the council and Better Belfast.
Urban sports have become popular in recent years, with top performers such as Tony Hawk becoming global stars.
