Belfast celebrates Jewish New Year

Belfast is preparing to celebrate the beginning of a new Jewish year in a series of events running until tomorrow evening.

Beginning last night, the Belfast Hebrew Congregation has been enjoying welcoming in the Jewish New Year, called Rosh Hashanah or 'Head of the Year'.

The Fortwilliam Gardens synagogue will be the setting for a number of prayer services and all people living in or visiting Belfast are welcome to join the festivities.

Rabbi Brackman told the BBC: "This is a celebration of the world and is open to everyone.

"Rosh Hashanah is a time for family, and for rededication of ourselves."

One of the event's main attractions is the blowing of the Shofar horn, which is used for the only time all year this morning and tomorrow morning.

Today also marks the time when Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadam.

Another festival, of a very different nature, is set to begin in Belfast on Thursday, with the Spring and Airbrake event attracting some of rock music's biggest names to fly in to Belfast.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18803027-ADNFCR
