Tom Hanks' film debuts in Belfast

A film starring two of Hollywood's leading actors which was made by Tom Hanks' production company is set to have its European premiere in Belfast.

City of Ember was filmed in Belfast following "long and hard" negotiations by Northern Ireland Screen and features both Tim Robbins and Bill Murray.

It will debut in Europe on October 9th, with young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, who receives her big break in the film, expected to join the established stars on the red carpet.

Tom Hanks' company Playtone made the film, which receives its premiere as part of Belfast's Cinemagic Festival.

For the purposes of the film, a former paint hall in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast was turned into a post-apocalyptic setting, with the film based on a Jeanne duPrau science fiction novel.

Richard Williams, chief executive of Northern Ireland Screen, said: "This major Hollywood film is a fine example of our ability, in the face of increasing global competition, to attract film and television projects to Northern Ireland."

It has been estimated that the film has already brought £9.2 million into the Irish economy.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18800739-ADNFCR
