Art academy 'take over' Titanic offices

A major exhibition from an arts institution is set to use the Titanic Drawing Offices as its location.

Long-standing art group the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts (RUA) is using the location for its annual exhibition - and believes it is the ideal place for a new permanent gallery in Belfast, the Irish Times reports.

The RUA's 127th exhibition will run until October 19th and is expected to attract many people to fly into Belfast to see it, especially in such an historic location.

Artist and academy member Hector McDonnell commented: "This is Belfast's Pompeii, it's awe-inspiring."

"All this grandeur and decay. It is overwhelming. There is a real generosity of scale - it would make the most wonderful modern art museum."

Areas being used for the exhibition include the offices of Lord Pirrie, the chairman of Harland & Wolff, who designed the infamous ship in Belfast.

Rita Duffy, who took over as RUA president last year, has explained that she wants the organisation to use its standing to be "a force for change, cohesion and positivity" in Northern Ireland.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18792728-ADNFCR
