The chief of Aer Lingus has pledged not to cancel the Belfast to London Heathrow route despite experiencing a drop in passenger numbers, it has been reported.Current economic pressures are said to have contributed to the falling number of customers but Dermot Mannion has insisted the carrier is in it for the long-haul, according to 4NI.co.uk.
Speaking to BBC Radio Ulster he said that there was no question of the firm ditching the route despite previously abandoning flights from the London hub to Shannon.
Today, the firm admitted that it would need to do some major cost cutting in some areas considering the high fuel costs and fall in passenger demand.
It revealed that it predicts its full year losses could reach between €22 million and €30 million and could increase further if action is not taken.
"It is now clear that we will require further fundamental changes in our operating cost base in order to minimise losses in 2009 and to help ensure the long-term viability of the business," Mr Mannion said.
