Surfing taking off in Northern Ireland

When thinking of surfing the likes of Hawaii and Australia may spring immediately to mind, but the sport is becoming increasingly popular in Northern Ireland.

With a number of surfing hotspots littered along the coast not far from Belfast, more and more surf enthusiasts are jetting in to the capital to get a taste of what its waves have to offer.

The likes of White Rocks and Ballycastle Bay are getting rave reviews as spectacular surfing spots, while R Devlin from Portballintrae claims it is "considered the best break in Northern Ireland" on surfing community site BeachWizard.

Surfingwaves.com has described the Irish coastline as "one of the most prolific and beautiful surfing backdrops in the northern hemisphere, if not the world".

There is expected to be a rise in all watersport activity as events in Beijing brings the likes of windsurfing and sailing into the public eye, with the likes of Ben Ainslie catching Britain's imagination at the Olympics.
