Ryanair buys 400 new aircraft

Ryanair is set to order 4,400 new planes in the biggest fleet deal it has ever completed, the airline has revealed.

Months after discussing plans with Airbus and Boeing, the world's two largest planemakers, an order has been placed.

The company's current order book expires in 2013 and the new planes could begin to be delivered in five years time to coincide with this, with many expected to fly in and out of Belfast on the company's various routes.

Group chief executive Michael O'Leary commented that, despite only ever dealing with Boeing, the Seattle-based plane giant, in the past, "it is also manageable for us to give the order to Airbus".

"New aircraft are about half as expensive as they were a few years ago, as a result of the weaker US dollar," he said.

Currently, Ryanair has a fleet of 166 planes but this is set to increase to 195 by March next year and 265 by 2012.

Although profits have taken a tumble, the budget airline is carrying more passengers, with 5.66 million flying in July, a 19 per cent rise on 2007 figures.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18720654-ADNFCR
