More Brits opting for domestic holidays

Despite financial pressures affecting Brits nationwide, people are still taking holidays but cutting costs by choosing to travel within the UK.

Ian Rumgay, European communications manager at TripAdvisor, said that one way of downsizing was to holiday in Britain.

With so many low-cost airlines operating domestic flights to major cities all over the country on a daily basis, Brits can still enjoy a summer break without breaking the bank.

Kelkoo recently revealed that searches for holidays in the UK were up by 39 per cent in the last twelve months. Searches for cottages and holiday homes rose 21 per cent whilst long haul holiday searches were down 12 per cent.

The UK Tourism Survey 2007 found that 76.8 million domestic holidays were taken last year. Total spending on domestic holidays reached £14.04 billion in 2007, a three per cent increase compared to the £13.59 billion in 2006.

Reports state that an increasing number of Brits are taking the short flight across the water to Northern Ireland's capital city Belfast, which offers the attraction and culture of abroad, with a neighbourly sense of home away from home. ADNFCR-1390-ID-18698548-ADNFCR
