Belfast City 'to increase flights by 3,000'

George Best Belfast City Airport could be poised to increase the number of annual flights operating in and out of the hub from 45,000 to 48,000, it has been rumoured.

Reports suggest that the Belfast airport is planning a runway extension in order to add a further 3,000 flights to its existing quota, which was proposed back in October 2007.

Low-cost airline Ryanair recently moved its larger aircraft to the airport as it made Belfast City its Northern Ireland base.

Under a draft Planning Agreement drawn up several years previously, the airport had been allowed to increase the number of seats per year from 1.5 million up to two million.

Belfast City airport is predicted to be used by an estimated 2.7 million passengers this year.

The airport recently welcomed US President George W Bush to the city on a visit to Stormont with Prime Minister Gordon Brown.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18655476-ADNFCR
