Life-size Titanic replica planned for Belfast

A £64 million project to build a life-size replica of parts of the Titanic could become reality at Belfast's Odyssey Arena.

Tourists are expected to flock to Belfast for the 100th anniversary of the tragedy in 2012, as the ship was built in the city's Harland and Wolff shipyard.

Included in the project would be a five-star hotel, exhibition area and conference rooms, but it requires a US-backed development plan to be accepted and government funding of over £39 million.

The plan has been proposed by American Titanic exhibition owner Michael Harris, who said the replica would be "suspended behind glass, 50 feet above the ground".

"The ship will be interactive and visitors will be able to explore its intricacies before travelling into actual re-creations of some of its most important elements including walking the grand staircase and seeing the luxury of the first class eating and sleeping facilities," he added.

A Hollywood interpretation of the Titanic tale broke all box office records in 1997 and the tragedy has continued to provoke interest for nearly a century.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18651494-ADNFCR
