Football fans to flock to new Belfast stadium

A new stadium is planned for Tillysburn in east Belfast and has been touted as a possible venue for Northern Ireland matches.

The ground would have a 10,000 capacity that could increase to cater for international fixtures, which would see supporters fly into the country in large numbers.

A stadium to replace Windsor Park and host Northern Ireland matches was proposed for the Maze, near Lisburn, but Glentoran president David Chick thinks the business group he is heading could step in if that project fails to get planning permission.

"The goalposts seem to be moving now in relation to the Maze but we are pressing on with our original plan to build a 10,000-seat stadium at Tillysburn," he said.

"If a decision goes against the Maze, we would hopefully be in a position to respond by increasing our capacity."

Glentoran and Irish First Division side Harland & Wolf Welders are understood to have agreed to share the Tillysburn stadium and it could be built within three years if it receives planning permission.

Northern Ireland sold out the 14,500 capacity Windsor Park for each of their European Championship 2008 qualifying games.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18651414-ADNFCR
