Camping is cool again, expert reports

The rise of luxury camping, the festival effect and people's desire to escape the rat race have led to a revival of camping holidays in the UK.

This is the opinion of Jonathan Knight, editor of the Cool Camping guide book series, who claims that camping has become cool again.

"It's always really been a cool thing to do amongst a minority... but now it's amongst the majority," he said.

The average age of people camping with the Camping and Caravanning Club has dropped from 60 to 49 as more families head for a 'green' holiday where they get to enjoy more of the British countryside.

With more flights linking mainland UK to Belfast, campers can explore the natural beauty of Northern Ireland, in particular, the picturesque mountain district of the Mournes. The Mourne Mountains have 12 peaks in total offering an attractive holiday destination for climbers and ramblers.

Figures show that despite the weather in 2007, occupancy for camp sites was up by 2.1 per cent overall and with the autumn sunshine campers were out in force with a 7.2 per cent increase in people staying on sites during the month of October.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18649622-ADNFCR
