Australians to travel to Belfast for less

Passengers from Australia will fly to Belfast more often if an agreement is reached between the country and the European Union, it has been reported.

A historic 'open skies' agreement is being discussed between the EU and Australia with the possibility of ending flight restrictions between the two continents, opening up the possibility of more tourists being able to visit Belfast.

Australian Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said: "I welcome this decision as an important step towards a historic open skies agreement which could deliver greater competition, more flights and lower air fares between Australia and EU countries."

Currently Australian airlines are only able to operate a few routes a week to European countries and such an agreement will mean flights to Belfast will be much cheaper and more regular.

EU transport ministers last week approved a mandate for the European Commission to negotiate with Australia over the proposed deal.

The EU is Australia's largest aviation market with around 4.5 million Australian's traveling to Europe in 2007.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18642670-ADNFCR
