Bush jets in to Belfast International Airport

US president George Bush will visit Belfast today as part of a seven-day European tour, it has been reported.

President Bush is expected to be met at Belfast International Airport by UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and then embark on a series of diplomatic meetings around the city.

First, President Bush will meet new First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness at Stormont Castle following an invitation by former First Minister Ian Paisley and Mr McGuinness, who visited him at the White House last December.

A big reason for the visit is that President Bush is keen to approve the devolution of political power to Northern Ireland which occurred last year.

North Belfast Assembly member Alban Maginness told the Belfast Telegraph: "He has maintained a constant and active interest in Northern Ireland and I suppose in the twilight of his administration he wants to maximise the opportunities that present themselves to reaffirm the things he did for people here."

President Bush's previous visit to the province came in 2003 when he attended a summit at Hillsborough with Tony Blair.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18640387-ADNFCR
