Cultural tradition to liven up Belfast next month

As a result of the peace and stability that has returned to Northern Ireland in recent years, the 12th July celebrations and traditional marches through the city have become a "family-friendly pageant open to all".

What was previously a source of conflict between Northern Ireland's loyalist and nationalist communities, the 12th July has become a calendar event for Belfast tourism, offering visitors a chance to see Northern Ireland's rich and varied cultural traditions at its best.

Josephine McGurk, communications executive for the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau, said: "The Orange parades which take place throughout Northern Ireland combine magnificent band uniforms, painted banners held aloft, flags flying, flute, drum and accordion playing from award-winning bands, all of which help to create a colourful kaleidoscope for the senses, the likes of which you will never have seen.

"This new festival showcases street entertainers, children's events, souvenir stalls and local food and drink to keep the onlooker both entertained and refreshed."

The 12th July is an annual Protestant celebration in Northern Ireland, commemorating the victory of King William of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18638226-ADNFCR
