Belfast tourism 'hits all-time high'

A record number of visitors travelled to Belfast last year, boosting Northern Ireland tourism by an estimated £313 million, latest figures show.

According to the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau, 6.9 million visitors came to the city in 2007, with an 18 per cent rise in the number of people staying in Belfast overnight.

Councillor Michael Browne, chairman of the City Council's development committee, said: "It is wonderful to see that visitors from all over the world are enjoying the vibrancy of a city that boasts top class hotels and visitor accommodation, outstanding shopping and a range of products and festivals that offer something for everyone.

"We are delighted to see that these figures are continuing to rise year on year and we are very hopeful for the future development of the tourism industry here."

Gerry Lennon, chief executive of the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau, added: "It is very encouraging to see such steady growth in inbound tourism, particularly in the number of out-of-state visitors staying for at least one night in Belfast."

In the last three years, Belfast has seen a 38 per cent increase in the number of overnight stays, with the total number of out-of-state overnight visitors rising by 43 per cent.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18632445-ADNFCR
