Ireland by car a popular choice with holidaymakers

Tourists travelling to Ireland this summer for a family holiday or weekend break can make the most of sightseeing opportunities by renting a car at the airport on arrival.

Most holidaymakers arrive at the island's east coast on a wide range of domestic and international flights flying into the Northern capital Belfast on a daily basis.

Hiring a car offers visitors the freedom to explore the island and see the beautiful landscape and cultural attractions that the west coast is famous for.

Thomas Brosnan, spokesperson for the AA Ireland, said: "Tourists tend to gravitate towards the north and west – Donegal down to Kerry. The main entrance points [to Ireland] would be Larne, Belfast, Dublin, Rosslare and Cork. What you're finding now is that the motorway network is increasing, the roads are improving… [and] access to the western parts has improved."

Visitors driving through Irish-speaking Gaeltacht areas should be aware that signposts may not have English translations – although most maps offer a guide to interpret these, he advised.

Statistics from Tourism Ireland show that, in 2006, 4.97 million Britons visited the region.ADNFCR-1390-ID-18625326-ADNFCR
