Belfast wins Lottery funding for green development

A proposal to create a new landmark park in east Belfast has won a multi-million pound funding package.

Social development minister Margaret Ritchie announced that the Connswater Community Greenway project would receive £3.2 million to develop a linear park to link the various green spaces through the east of the city.

The Northern Ireland development project secured £23.5 million from the Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmarks programme to link the Castlereagh Hills with Belfast Lough.

Connecting 379 acres of public open space, the project plans to construct 43 bridges and 19kms of cycle and walkways, sure to attract tourists and locals alike.

The environmental improvements are expected to boost Belfast's leisure and recreation facilities and offer connected pathway for visitors to explore the natural beauty of the capital.

Breidge Gadd, NI chair of the Big Lottery Fund, said: "After lots of hard work from the projects and some extremely tough decisions taken by the Living Landmarks committee we are delighted to announce the three successful initiatives.
