Thousands take to streets for Belfast marathon

More than 15,000 people took part in the Belfast marathon yesterday (Monday, May 5th).

The 27th annual event brought serious competitors and fun runners together, with people beginning at Belfast City Hall and ending in Ormeau Park.

Both of last year's winners managed to hang on their top spots this time round, UTV reports.

John Mutai of Kenya got round in two hours, 16 minutes and 32 seconds, while Marashet Jumma of Ethiopia completed the race in two hours, 39 minutes and 22 seconds.

Marashet's time was two and a half minutes faster than her time in 2007.

Other strong performers were Bogdan Dziuba of Poland and Ukraine's Vyacheslav Prykhodko, who finished in second and third positions in the men's race.

The marathon is a showcase for a city that attracts people from all over the world, drawn by a rich history and a wide choice of top bars and restaurants.

Direct flights to Belfast operate from airports all around the UK, including London Heathrow, Glasgow and Manchester.
