Famous battle painting bought by Belfast gallery

A famous painting by Dutch Baroque era painter Jan Wyck has been bought by a gallery in Belfast and can be viewed by visitors to the city, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

The oil painting, which depicts the Battle of the Boyne, was bought by the Emer Gallery on Antrim Road for £68,600 at Whyte's Irish art sale.

The Battle of the Boyne, which took place in 1690, saw the deposed King James VII of Scotland and James II of England and Ireland defeated by James' nephew, William III.

The painting depicts the Duke of Schomberg urging King William on his white horse to advance. It is believed that Jan Wyck was at the battle because his paintings were so accurate and detailed.

The Emer Gallery's Michael Flanagan said: "The historical significance of this painting cannot be over-estimated.

"The painter, Jan Wyck, from the Dutch Baroque era, was most likely at the battle, and his paintings are famous for their detail and accuracy in recording the events of that famous day.

"This painting is a living part of our heritage and I am pleased that it will be staying in Ireland."
