bmi to pilot mobile check-in at Belfast City Airport

Passengers flying through George Best Belfast City Airport could be among the first in the UK to check in using their mobile phones, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

Airline bmi is introducing a pilot scheme on the Heathrow to Belfast route in a month's time, and if successful it will be rolled out across the UK.

Those taking part could see their airport waiting times reduced. It would allow passengers to have a barcode sent to their mobile phone letting them go straight through security where the barcode will be checked.

Brenda Morgan, sales manager at bmi, said: "Belfast is ideal for the experiment and the trials are all ready to go.

"It will be completely paperless and will fast track anyone who wants to use the system," said Ms Morgan.

"It will be particularly convenient for business travellers, who - if they finish their meetings early or late - can simply have their PA change the details and have a new barcode sent.

"There will be a different barcode, of course, for each journey, and the service will be available on all our eight daily flights to Heathrow in London."

Flights to Belfast City Airport are available from UK airports including Birmingham, Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Newquay and Southampton.
