Aer Lingus 'should use Irish on Heathrow to Belfast route'

Irish national airline Aer Lingus has been criticised by Ireland's prime minister for failing to make flight announcements in Irish on its Belfast to Heathrow route.

The airline has begun flying from London Heathrow to Belfast International, making it even simpler for visitors to reach the Northern Irish capital from London.

However, staff have been banned from issuing Irish language flight announcements on the route, which has angered Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, the BBC reports.

Responding to a comment made by Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny about the development, he said: "A few sentences [in Irish] wouldn't hurt anyone."

However, he added that the Irish government had no role in the matter, even though it owns shares in Aer Lingus.

Other airlines that fly to Belfast International include budget carrier easyJet, which offers connections from Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Liverpool, Stansted, and others.
