Noise monitoring system being set up at Belfast City

A new noise monitoring system is being set up at Belfast City Airport.

The £500,000 system comes in the wake of recommendations made by an examination of the airport's planning agreement, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

Belfast City has grown rapidly in recent years, boosting its passenger numbers by 76.6 per cent to 2.1 million since 2001. Airlines operating from the hub include Flybe, Ryanair, Manx2 and bmi.

The installation comes after local residents' groups raised concerns about noise levels at Belfast City.

Brian Ambrose, the hub's chief executive, said: "At a time when the airport is looking to the future, it is important that we continue to operate to the highest standards in all facets of our business, including environmental management."

Separately, the airport is considering an extension to its runway, which could eventually lead airlines such as Ryanair to launch more long-range destinations.
