'One bag rule' remains at Belfast airports

Air passengers flying from Belfast will still only be able to take one item of hand luggage with them onboard flights, despite a general relaxation of the 'one bag rule'.

Tighter regulations limiting travellers to one carry-on bag following the alleged terrorist plot in August 2006 have been eased today (January 7th) at airports around the UK.

Hubs such as Heathrow, Edinburgh, Manchester and Stansted have relaxed the rule, but it will stay in place at Belfast International and Belfast City airports.

Debra Matchett, a spokeswoman for Belfast International, said: "It is a rolling programme that some airports will be able to implement fairly quickly, at others it will take time to get extra machines.

"We are currently reconfiguring our central search security area."

Some airlines, including Ryanair, are continuing to keep the one bag rule in place even at airports where the regulations have been eased, perhaps because they have imposed lucrative charges for check-in baggage.
